Job involves turning town’s former Galleries shopping centre into market hall, homes and leisure complex
Galliford Try has signed up for the first phase of a scheme to turn a former shopping centre in Wigan into a new mixed-use scheme.
Demolition contractor BCEGI has already carried out work to tear down the Galleries shopping centre which will be replaced by a new market hall along with a hotel, more than 450 homes and leisure facilities such as bowling alley and mini-golf.
Galliford Try’s work, which also includes a £4.6m basement enabling works package, is worth around £44m.
The market hall has been designed by Sheila Bird Studio with the hall set to run across 75,000 sq ft.
A cinema and a six-storey hotel, designed by JM Architects, and which will be known as Hampton by Hilton, are also included in later phases of the £135m scheme which is being masterminded by Wigan council and development partner Cityheart.
