Number of staff topped 4,000 last year

Pre-tax profit at Murphy went up a quarter last year as the firm said it was now benefitting from better contract selection.

The firm, which carries out building and civils work across the UK, Ireland and Canada, said its numbers were helped by an improved performance in sectors including transportation, energy infrastructure and water.

Pre-tax profit was up 25% to 拢83m on turnover flat at 拢1.4bn with net cash at the year-end up 15% to 拢401m.

Murphy celebrates its 75th anniversary next year

The firm, which celebrates its 75th anniversary next year, said its order book stood at a record 拢5.4bn.

The number of staff during the year was up 5% to break the 4,000 figure at 4,060.
