Stephen Ponting is the new construction manager for ISG Jackson’s public division
How did you get into construction?
Coming from a family of construction tradesmen maybe it was inevitable that I would drift into building. I think I got the short straw, though, ending up in construction management!
Biggest challenge the new role presents?
To have a positive impact on the business, complement the array of existing skills and experience that exists in ISG Jackson and to strive to further improve the end product.
Greatest influence in your professional life?
I admire the quality of work that a good tradesman can produce and that has always inspired me to try to replicate it in management activities.
Biggest professional achievement?
Rewards and satisfaction of achievement are often restricted to project completions so you have to learn to enjoy every element of the process along the way.
Worst day at work?
Probably one of those many occasions when you are on site, soaked to the skin, mud up to the knees of your new suit and all the ink has run on your note pad and you ask yourself: ‘Why?’!
Best advice you’ve received?
‘The client is always right’ and go with your first instincts.
Favourite building?
Anything by Gaudi. Parc Guell in Barcelona has a collection of Gaudi work and while it’s not a building the large terrace elevated on columns at the foot of the park is an absolute treasure.
How do you unwind?
Usually a beer or a quick blast on the bike, but never in that order. I recently started a bit of sailing too.
Would you recommend construction to friends and family?
Definitely. After explaining what a hard, unrewarding environment it can be at times, I think that anybody prepared to put enough effort in will be successful.
And finally, one from leftfield... beard or goatee?
Beard definitely, but it has to be the full Monty Panesar no designer stuff.
