Bob Hall puts strong emphasis on training for the year ahead.

Bob Hall has been inaugurated as the new ECA president for 2007-2008. He took over from Alan North at an official ceremony during the ECA conference in Rhodes.

Bob started his career as a student apprentice with Southern Electric in 1966. He gained a first class honours degree in electrical engineering at Portsmouth Polytechnic, and is a Chartered Engineer and a Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology.

His career with Southern Electric saw him progress to senior management level. In 1991, he was appointed as contracting director for the newly formed Southern Electric Contracting. He became the Contracting Group chief executive in 2002. He was also a member of the Scottish and Southern Energy Executive Committee.

In 1992, SEC had a turnover of 拢50 m, was loss making and employed some 1200 staff who transferred into the new, wholly-owned subsidiary. For the year ended March 2005, the last year before Bob retired, SEC had a turnover of 拢220 m, made a net profit of 拢15.2 m and employed 2800 staff.

Bob was on the board of ESCA Services and has been on the ECA Finance Committee. He is also on the board of the Electrical Contractors鈥 Insurance Company and the Electrical Contractors鈥 Insurance Services. He took over the chairmanship of the Education and Training Committee in 2006.

Whilst with SEC, Bob was a strong supporter of apprentice recruitment and training, and also of staff development frameworks. He served on the SummitSkills board from 2005 to 2006.

Bob pledges to support ongoing training in order to offset the predicted skills gap. 鈥淚 feel it is important that we invest in the ongoing training of operatives to prevent a gap in skills, particularly at this time of technological change,鈥 he says.

Bob and his wife Sandra have been married for 33 years. They have an apartment in Menorca, which they bought to use in their retirement.
