Engineering graduate numbers are set to rise within the next few years, with A-level Mathematics numbers at their highest levels for 15 years, according to government body the Further Mathematics Network (FMN).

A-level Mathematics results, due to be published later this week, are predicted to have risen by between 5% and 10%, with Further Mathematics expected to have risen by 15%.

Executive director of the Engineering Council (ECUK), Andrew Ramsay, said: 鈥淲e are delighted with the latest evidence of increasing interest in Further Mathematics. Maths skills are fundamental to the success of professional engineers 鈥� Further Mathematics A level provides a sound foundation from which to study engineering at university.鈥�

The skills shortage within the engineering sector has seen a decrease in home grown engineering talent in the past few years. An increase in the number of Mathematics students could mean a turnaround in this trend.
