Currys has become the first big UK retail chain to sell domestic solar panels.

The move, which the retailer says will enable homeowners to slash their energy bills by 50%, comes as Currys says the public鈥檚 attitude to the environment is changing. 鈥淲e think the moment has arrived. We are anticipating interest from those concerned about rising energy costs, early adopters and the environmentally conscious,鈥� said a company spokesperson.

Electrical contractors should recognise the potential for new business as the sector, so long a niche market begins to come of age.

Currys鈥� solar panel offering will cost around 拢9000 for the supply and installation of a system for the average three-bedroom home. This is cheaper than current specialist suppliers who average 拢16 000 for the equivalent. However, it would still take between seven and 18 years to fully recoup the costs. Currys will employ Energy Saving Trust accredited installers through the Solar Century network. The panels will be supplied by manufacturer Sharp.
