Construction firms will be forced to keep a record of their building materials under a government drive to cut the amount of waste going into landfill sites or being dumped illegally.
Waste management plans will be a legal requirement for all projects over 拢250 000. Those responsible for the plans will need to assess the waste that will be produced on a construction site and detail how it will be reused, recycled or disposed of. Higher level reporting will apply to projects over 拢500 000.
Environment minister Ben Bradshaw said: 鈥淩ising levels of waste crime are stopping us from achieving a sustainable construction sector.鈥
The construction industry uses 400 million tonnes of materials each year but well over 100 million tonnes ends up in landfill.
